Freak wave kills essex passenger aboard tilbury
The cruise ship, based out of the port of tilbury and operated by cruise and maritime voyages, was bound for the thurrock terminal when it was hit by a large wave off the coast of cornwall.

An 85 year old man, named as james swinstead from colchester died after water crashed through one of the vessel’s windows.

A woman, aged 70, was airlifted to hospital but her condition is not said to be life threatening.Fourteen other passengers aboard the ship, which was due at tilbury this afternoon after completing a 42 night cruise to the azores, were left with minor injuries.

The vessel’s waldorf restaurant sustained damage during the incident but the cmv bosses say tomorrow night’s scheduled sailing to the northern lights will go ahead.

One of the injured passengers, allan cooper, told channel 4 news: "The seas, visible through the windows, were very rough.Waves were peaking nearly parallel to the windows.Furniture in the restaurant was beginning to shift, so people were holding on to tables and chairs.

"Suddenly there was a very loud ’bang’ and the daylight in the room reduced as a wall of seawater covered most of the starboard windows. The bang was the breaching of a forward window in the restaurant.

"Pandemonium broke out. Some people were drenched and most people were wet but people were very well behaved, looking out for each other, whilst all anxious to get out of the danger area. "

At lunchtime on saturday, a spokesman for cmv said: "Cruise and maritime voyages confirm that following a freak wave that hit their cruise ship marco polo yesterday afternoon during adverse sea conditions.

"We regret to advise that one elderly passenger has died and a second unrelated passenger was airlifted for further shore side medical assistance where we understand her condition is not life threatening.

"Marco polo has sustained some damage in the waldorf restaurant and following reparation works will sail tomorrow evening from tilbury on her scheduled 14 nights cruise to norway and the land of the northern lights. "

The vessel sailed from tilbury on january 5 and is carrying 735 mainly british passengers and 349 crew.

Mr swinstead was a former marketing man and father of two.He had been on the dream cruise with his wife, helen, 82.

The company spokesman said: "Our thoughts are very much with these passengers and polo ralph lauren italia online their families during this difficult time. "

Severe warnings for polo ralph lauren outlet italia wind and rain were issued by the met office as more high winds and heavy rain battered the south and south east of england on friday night.

From cruise critic uk, this aging cruise ship seems to have had it’s better days, launched in 1964, that means she’s 50 years old.

Dreadful christmas and new year cruise

Horrendous, horrendous, horrendous. The captain should never have taken the ship out of tilbury. He knew that we were heading straight into a storm in the english channel and a force 10 gale going through the bay of biscay. All other shipping took shelter but he boasted to us all that he was the only one who took his ship through such dreadful weather. His decision meant that we had many injured passengers, some needing hospital treatment.Out of 14 days we only had 3 days of calm seas.We missed out some of our port of calls and stayed less time in others. We should have stopped at lisbon on our way back but the captain decided to go straight through from madeira to la havre saying it was to avoid the worst of the weather going back over the bay of biscay. If fact he took us through at the worst time when the storm was at its peak.Again this caused many more injuries to passengers and a lot of damage to the interior of the ship.Out of our 14 day holiday i was bedridden with severe sea sickness for 8.Weather conditions for shipping is known well in advance so the safety and comfort of passengers should not had been put at risk as it was on this ship.

Putting the weather aside i can honestly say that this company has no idea how to run a cruise ship.

The chef has never worked in an english restaurant and has no idea how to cook for the english taste. Our christmas dinner was a joke. The traditional christmas day meal that was advertised in their brochure it was not.We had 2 slices of rolled turkey, 1 pigs in blanket 3 halves of sprouts, 1 small floret of cauliflower and 4 tiny pieces of fried potatoes. We had no roast potatoes, stuffing, parsnips, peas or carrots. The christmas pudding was anything but.It was a half round piece of dry sponge flavoured with some mixed spice with no fruit in it at all.The rest of the meals on this ship were equally unappetising and clearly made from cheap ingredients. The cold meats for salads at lunch time consisted of eastern european style processed meats. It was the same for the whole 14 days.

This is a very budget ship charging luxury prices. We paid 4, 500.00 for the 2 of us for this cruise. We have been on other cruises and paid a lot less than this for fantastic food and cabins. Our cabin was supposed to be a premium outside double. It was very dated with leaking windows, hard small single beds ralph lauren outlet online italia pushed together with very small worn quilts and covers.

The crew were an unhappy and unhelpful bunch with a few exceptions, our cabins steward being one of them.
